Learning in Public: How I Used Twitter to Share My Tech Journey
Lessons that can help you get started with your learning in public journey
So, picture this: It’s April 6th of last year, and I decided to create a Twitter account to share my knowledge about tech and teach digital skills to others. I was learning a lot and wanted to spread my love for knowledge with the world.

Fast forward to May 8th, and I enrolled in the ALX Software Engineering program. It was a demanding course, and I wasn’t sure how I was going to balance studying with teaching and writing about digital tools and skills.
After giving it some thought, I remembered something Gary Vaynerchuk said: it’s easier to document than to create new content. And he was right! When you document what you’re doing, there’s always something to write about. You don’t have to come up with new ideas every time you want to write something.

So, I decided to document my journey on Twitter. But, I had to figure out how to do it right and get it in front of the right audience.
I did some research and stumbled upon the concept of learning in public. It sounded fascinating, and I thought to myself, “This is exactly what I want to do!”
But then, I was faced with several questions. Should I just tweet that I’m studying a certain topic? Or should I write detailed descriptions of what I learned? Should I create tutorials?
I checked out other people who were advocates for learning in public. They had huge followings and tons of tweets. I tried to go through their accounts to see how they began and what they were tweeting about. But, it was impossible to go through everything.
So, I turned to YouTube and watched videos of people talking about how to learn in public and build in public. One person who stood out was Kunal Kushwaha. He was a student, just like me, and was also teaching others what he knew.
I was motivated by him and took the suggestions he gave on a video chat he held and published on YouTube.

And so, I started documenting my journey on Twitter. In the beginning, it seemed that no one cared about it but with time, I realized that a few people who followed me loved it! So, I kept updating my audience on a regular basis about what I was learning and doing.
From all of this, I learned that there’s no unique formula for creating content by documenting your journey. You just have to go with what feels good to you and keep iterating until you find what works best for you.

That’s how I got started. In my next post, I’ll share how I started to consciously grow my Twitter account.
So, there you have it! Documenting your journey can be a great way to share your knowledge with others and keep yourself accountable. Don’t be afraid to try different things and see what works for you. Happy documenting!
3 Lessons from my journey that you should pick up
Consider documenting your learning journey on social media: Sharing your learning journey on social media can be a powerful way to connect with others who have similar interests and learn from their experiences. It also helps to keep you accountable and motivated to keep learning.
Experiment with different ways of documenting your journey: There is no one-size-fits-all approach to documenting your learning journey. Try different formats such as text, images, videos, or even podcasting to find what works best for you.
Engage with your audience and seek feedback: When sharing your journey, actively engage with your audience and ask for feedback. This can help you improve the quality of your content and also build a community around your journey.
