The Perpetual Student: Why Lifelong Learning Is Essential for Success in Tech
From Risk to Reward: My Journey as a Perpetual Student in the Tech Industry.
Lifelong learning is essential for success in any field, but particularly in the fast-paced and ever-changing world of technology. As a perpetual student, I have learned firsthand the benefits of committing to ongoing learning and skill development. In 2021, I made the difficult decision to quit my job in order to make time for studying the things I was passionate about.
Although my decision was met with skepticism from others, I knew that the risk was worth it. I traveled to the capital city of Ghana to attend tech training programs that were only offered there. However, living in the city presented many challenges, such as long commutes and high living costs.
To sustain myself financially, I started a freelance agency offering web and graphic design services, which I was able to do because of my previous experience in these areas. I also started blogging and eventually hired extra help to write content and handle design projects when I couldn't.
To make the most of my time, I found ways to multitask and make use of every spare moment. I would work on my blog or client projects during class breaks, listen to podcasts or watch tutorials while commuting, and even study with colleagues during car rides.
I discovered the ALX software engineering program and enrolled in it. Through the program, I was able to master various technologies and programming languages, which allowed me to expand my skillset and pursue new opportunities.
It's worth noting that the tech industry is constantly evolving, with new frameworks, software, and digital tools being released frequently. One significant advancement in recent years is the advent of generative AI, which has the potential to revolutionize many industries and transform the way we interact with technology. Keeping up with these changes and staying up-to-date with the latest developments in the industry is crucial for any software engineer.
By committing to ongoing learning, I was able to earn my AWS cloud practitioner certification, AWS solutions architect associate certification and continued my studies in software engineering. I am currently about two months away from graduating from the software engineering program and I am also excited to mention that I got my first job as a software engineer about two weeks ago.
Being a perpetual student requires dedication and hard work, but it is essential for success in the tech industry. The world of technology is constantly evolving, and it is vital to stay up-to-date with the latest advancements and techniques. By prioritizing ongoing learning, we can keep pace with the ever-changing landscape of technology and position ourselves for long-term success.
